A lucid dream is a dream in which the sleeper is aware that they are dreaming, and is able to consciously manipulate images and scenery within the dream environment. We spend approximately one-third of our lives asleep. How exciting would it be to be able to spend that time exploring worlds of your own creation; be they spacescapes on the outer limits of the universe, deep sea quests to Atlantis or even flights through the mountanous regions of the Himalayas?

One area in which lucid dreaming is extremely beneficial is the realm of creativity and artistic inspiration, where the sleeper can explore an idea, i.e., a musical composition or film concept, from various angles of abstraction, and with potentialities for original material to be carried through to waking life.

Once it is realised that the manifestation of dreams in our inner world is conducted by our own mental constructs, lucid dreams can be used for rehearsing for success in waking life. Maybe you're nevous about public speaking, or performing musically infront vast audiences? It is interesting to note that the neural activity within the brain during a dreamed activity is identical to its state during the actual event. Therefore, neurological passages related to the performance of the activity can be formed within the dream in preperation for the actual performance in the waking state.

This practice can be used with the intention of overcoming issues such as phobias and anxiety (in social situations for example), simply by reinforcing mental imagery within the dream. This form of positve visualisation is a common method utlised by many self-help groups, but in a lucid dream it can be taken to a whole new level. The overall satisfaction gained from directing these visualisations, and being so immersed in them that you feel as though you're actually there provides an effective psychological catharsis.

So if you're interested in the enigma that is the human imagination; it's potentialites for unlimited scope into the nature of reality; it's effectiveness in dealing with phsycial/mental ailmets; or best of all, in my opinion, it's limitless stimulation of creative thought and capacity for problem solving, then brain entrainment is certainly for you.
